Bahamas

Graced with extensive beaches bleached white by the year-round sun and surrounded by turquoise waters filled with varied and colourful sea life, the Bahamas is a mecca for divers, sailors and sun-worshippers alike. Although often thought to be part of the Caribbean, the Bahamas is actually an archipelago of 700 islands with thousands of small 'cays' strung out in the ocean starting 55 miles from Miami in the Atlantic Ocean.

Due to its proximity to the US, the Bahamas has become an offshore banking and financial center. Tourism however remains the Bahamas most important industry with most resorts located in the Nassau area. The long stretches of empty beaches, clear waters and excellent facilities have made the Bahamas a popular destination throughout the year and the varied attractions of each of the islands ensure that there is something for everyone.

Magnificent beaches stretch for miles along an unspoiled coastline; high on the mountains, cool and pristine cloud forests are alive with mysterious sounds and below splendid tropical rain forests are packed with life.

Costa Rica is famous for its progressive approach to conservation and is the prime eco-tourism destination in Central America due to its wealth of protected areas. Over 25 percent of Costa Rica is protected, spread between 75 different national parks, wildlife refuges and biological reserves.

In such a small geographical area it is surprising how much there is to see and do in Costa Rica. There are activities to suit all travellers and any mood, from action to relaxation. These include surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling and sunbathing, horseback riding, hiking and wildlife-spotting, deep sea fishing, white water rafting, or river cruises. One can also simply enjoy a soak in the hot springs. The best all inclusive resorts are located in the Guanacaste area in the Northwest portion of Costa Rica on the Pacific ocean.

Travellers are also drawn to the country because of the endearing Tico, as Costa Ricans are known, hospitality. Costa Ricans are known for their incredible gregariousness and delightful ability to pamper guests - whether pointing out the right direction or cooking a typical authentic meal, they will be full of smiles and warmth. All this together with easy accessibility and an efficient infrastructure makes Costa Rica the jewel of Central America and a gem of a vacation destination.

Mexico: Yucatan Peninsula

The Mexican Yucatán is quite different from the rest of Mexico; a distinct change in the landscape, people and architecture as one crosses into the remoteness of the Mayan realm. The atmosphere is more relaxed and tranquil, and the legacy of an ancient people is evident in the scattering of ruins within the encroaching jungle. It is an area famed for its white sand beaches, magnificent off-shore coral reefs and diving opportunities on the Mexican Caribbean coast, as well as for the region's splendid ruins: the extraordinary Mayan temples and ceremonial centres of an ancient kingdom.

The peninsula is an area of great diversity, from tropical jungle and rainforest, flat and hot countryside dotted with Mayan villages, a superb coastline with popular resorts and islands, numerous archaeological sites, and colonial towns.

Once distant and inaccessible, tourism has made determined advances especially around the major places of interest, to the Mayan sites of Chichén Itzá and Uxmal, and along the most visited stretch of the coast incorporating the 'party resort' of Cancún, the quieter Riviera Maya, and the islands of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres. These resorts and islands have become highly sought-after package tour destinations with renowned vacation facilities.

United States

America was stumbled upon by Columbus in 1492 and for more than 500 years people have travelled here seeking a better life in the 'land of opportunity'. The land was fought over by colonial powers for centuries and finally won its independence from Britain in 1783. The American people have succeeded in forging one of the worlds most united, democratic and tolerant nations, a fascinating melting-pot of cultures, and the undisputed military and economic heavyweight of the world.

The country is made up of 48 neighbouring states of the continental USA, plus the huge state of Alaska, northwest of Canada, and the volcanic islands of Hawaii, 2,000 miles out into the Pacific. There are also the US territories, which include Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the Midway Islands and the US Virgin Islands. Tourism is focused mainly in the great cities such as New York Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington, as well as sunshine states such as California, Florida and Hawaii where millions of tourists congregate each year to enjoy the fine beaches, natural wonders and man-made attractions such as Disneyland, Universal Studios and Hollywood.

Too many miss out on the mind-blowing landscapes of the interior which can found in the wealth of magnificent National Parks like Yosemite, Yellowstone and the Adirondacks, as well as spectacular sights like the Grand Canyon and the Rocky Mountains. With all this on their doorstep, it's easy to understand why some Americans have never bothered getting a passport.
