Cancun, Mexico (April 16, 2012) - The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau proudly reports one of the most successful and unique Spring Break seasons ever, marked by record-breaking hotel occupancy rates, a strong presence of celebrities and high-profile VIPs, as well as the culmination of two of the most anticipated events the destination has ever hosted.
Spanish artist Enrique Iglesias kicked off Spring Break in Cancun with an exclusive performance at Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort, as part of his \"Euphoria” tour, on March 10, 2012. The world-renowned, award-winning singer, famous for his pop music hits and songwriting, performed in front of more than 11,000 fans, including tourists, locals and government VIPs.
Cancun received an influx of celebrities throughout Spring Break, many of which arrived on private planes to celebrate the 60th birthday of Sir Philip Green, a British businessman. Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Hudson and Gwyneth Paltrow, among others, made their way to Rosewood Mayakoba, just north of Playa del Carmen, to take part in this lavish oceanfront affair.
The first-ever Cancun-Riviera Maya Wine & Food Festival also took place over Spring Break, drawing in more than 5,000 visitors from March 15-18. Guests from all over the world embarked on a gastronomic journey of culinary delights prepared by 24 chefs from countries across the American continent, all in honor of world-renowned Chef Ferran Adria. Wine makers and spirits connoisseurs from across Latin America also showcased their exquisite products during the more than 30 official Cancun-Riviera Maya Wine & Food Festival events that took place throughout the four days. The Cancun Convention & Visitors Bureau and Festival organizers received rave reviews for this first edition, and are already planning the second annual event, to take place in 2013 under the theme The Encounter Between Europe and the Americas.
With its diverse offerings, including pristine beaches, ancient culture, award-winning gastronomy and endless options for active travelers, foreigners enjoying their Spring Break vacations accounted for Cancun\'s approximate 85% hotel occupancy.
